BEHIND THE
BIRTH OF ITADORI SAUNA

Nestled in the northwestern part of Seki City, Gifu Prefecture,
Itadori is a hidden gem known for its pristine natural beauty
and tranquil atmosphere. Home to the famous Monet’s Pond
and surrounded by stunning landscapes, Itadori offers
a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Inspired by my childhood memories in Itadori,
I founded Itadori Sauna with the goal of providing
a place where people can relax and recharge. With its unique location
and exceptional facilities, Itadori Sauna has quickly become a
popular destination, attracting over 15,000 visitors in just two years.

A History of Saunas

Saunas can trace their origins back approximately 2,000 years to Finland. Initially, the predominant type was the “smoke sauna,” where stones were heated to generate steam, serving as both a bathing and heating method during cold winters. With advancements in heating systems and construction techniques, a diverse range of sauna types emerged. By the 20th century, saunas had spread beyond Scandinavia and become a global phenomenon. In Finland, saunas are deeply ingrained in daily life, serving not only as a means of relaxation but also as a focal point for social interactions and rituals.

Health Benefits of Saunas

Saunas stimulate blood circulation and promote sweating, boosting metabolism, aiding in detoxification, relaxing muscles, and relieving fatigue. The alternating between hot and cold temperatures helps regulate the autonomic nervous system, contributing to stress reduction and improved sleep quality. Additionally, saunas have been shown to positively impact the cardiovascular system and immune function. However, it’s essential to stay hydrated and avoid overexertion when using a sauna. Saunas are recognized as a comprehensive relaxation method that supports both physical and mental well-being.

Sauna Culture in Japan

In Japan, sauna culture has become deeply integrated with sento (public baths) and onsen (hot springs). The unique concept of “totonou” (feeling refreshed and invigorated) has gained popularity, and the combination of sauna, cold plunge, and outdoor relaxation is widely practiced. In recent years, outdoor saunas and experiential facilities integrated with nature have attracted attention and are being utilized as tourism resources. Sauna-themed events and communities have also proliferated, making it a culture enjoyed by people of all ages and genders. Japan’s unique innovations in sauna culture have garnered worldwide attention.
